Choosing Krakish: A Guide to Coffee and Tea Tassels

The krakish is the piece people underestimate. It looks decorative, and it is — but it also does a job nobody thinks about until it is missing.

What it is actually for

When two identical steel flasks stand side by side, one coffee and one tea, there is no way to tell them apart without opening them. The tassel solves that. In most Kuwaiti households the colours are consistent enough that guests read them without being told.

This is why tassels are almost always bought in pairs.

The three types

Rattan. Woven natural fibre, usually off-white or natural brown. The most traditional look, and the most forgiving — it does not show marks and it survives being packed for a trip.

Embroidered. Thread work on fabric, often with a pattern or a motif. This is where the detail is, and where a set can genuinely match a flask's colour rather than approximate it. More delicate — treat it as an indoor piece.

Beaded. Glass or metal beadwork, sometimes with metallic thread. The dressiest of the three, best for a formal majlis. Heaviest, and worth checking the cord on before buying.

How to judge quality

Three things separate good work from filler:

  • The cord. It should be woven or braided, not a single glued strand. This is what fails first.
  • The finish at the top. Look at where the tassel gathers. Good work has a tight, even wrap. Loose or glued gathering unravels within months.
  • Weight balance. A tassel that is too heavy for its cord will pull and eventually tear at the loop.

Sizing

Match the tassel length to the flask. A 1 litre flask carries a long tassel well; a 500ml mini flask looks wrong with the same one — the tassel ends up longer than the flask itself. Most sets are made for standard 1 litre flasks.

Caring for them

Do not wash them. Spot-clean with a barely damp cloth and let them dry flat and away from direct sun, which fades thread faster than anything else. Store them hanging rather than folded so the strands do not crease.

You can see the full handmade range in the krakish collection, and the flasks they are made for in thermos and tassels.
