The Kuwait Camping Checklist: What to Pack for the Desert Season

Kuwait's camping season runs from the first cool weeks through to spring, and the difference between a good trip and a frustrating one is usually decided before anyone leaves the house. This is the list, ordered by how much you will regret forgetting each item.

Hot drinks — the part nobody compromises on

Coffee and tea are the centre of a Kuwaiti camp, not an accessory to it.

  • Two flasks minimum — one coffee, one tea. Stainless steel, not glass: the drive out is rough and a cracked liner ends the trip's coffee.
  • Tassels on both — so nobody has to open a flask to find out what is in it.
  • Finjan cups in a tin — the tin matters more than the cups. Loose cups in a bag break or go missing.
  • An insulated bottle per person — cold water stays cold for far longer than a plastic bottle in a cool box.

Serving

A camp still needs a surface and something to put on it:

  • A tray that will not blow away — weight is a feature here, not a downside.
  • Covered bowls or containers. Open bowls and desert wind do not mix.
  • A folding side table or trolley if you are setting up for more than one night.

The things people forget

Every year the same items:

  • A carry bag sized to the flask. Flasks roll, tip and leak in a car boot. A fitted bag solves this and doubles as the thing you hand to someone to carry.
  • Spare cups. More people show up than were invited. This is not a risk, it is a certainty.
  • Disposable containers. For leftovers and for sending food home with people.
  • A small torch or lantern for the table. Not for light to walk by — for light to pour by.

Packing so it survives the drive

Three habits worth adopting:

  1. Fill flasks completely. A full flask holds heat longer and does not slosh.
  2. Preheat before filling. Boiling water in, two minutes, out, then the drink. It buys hours.
  3. Pack flasks upright and wedged. Most leaks are not faulty lids; they are flasks that spent an hour on their side.

Buy it as a set

Assembling camp gear piece by piece across several orders is how people end up with three flasks and no cups. Our camping collection gathers the full range in one place, and the carry bags are sized around the flasks we sell rather than generic.

Prepare in the weeks before the season starts. By the first cool weekend the popular sizes are usually gone.
